Facebook, Instagram and Threads Community Notes feature will use same tech as Elon Musk’s X

Meta has introduced a Community Notes feature, leveraging Elon Musk's X algorithm to combat misinformation across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. The initiative aims for unbiased fact-checking through crowdsourced contributions. Initially, notes will not be public as Meta tests the system, with global rollout planned for the future while retaining third-party fact-checking in the interim.
Facebook, Instagram and Threads Community Notes feature will use same tech as Elon Musk’s X
Facebook, Instagram and Threads parent company Meta has announced that its Community Notes feature, designed to combat misinformation through crowdsourced fact-checking, will incorporate technology developed by Elon Musk's X (formerly Twitter). Specifically, Meta will utilise the same open-source algorithm that powers X's similar Community Notes service.
The announcement comes as the company said that it will begin “testing this new approach by allowing contributors from our community to write and rate notes on content across Facebook, Instagram and Threads, starting March 18.
According to the company, around 200,000 potential contributors in the US have already signed up so far across all three apps. The Meta said that it expects “Community Notes to be less biased than the third party fact checking program it replaces because it allows more people with more perspectives to add context to posts.”

Meta explains how its new content moderation tool will work

In a blog post, Meta detailed its new content moderation tool, confirming its reliance on X's publicly available algorithm. The company plans to refine and adapt the algorithm over time to better suit its Facebook, Instagram, and Threads platforms.
“As X's algorithm and program information is open source—meaning free and available for anyone to use—we can build on what X has done, learn from the researchers who have studied it, and improve the system for our own platforms,” Meta said.
“As our own version develops, we may explore different or adjusted algorithms to support how Community Notes are ranked and rated,” it added
Notes, however, will not appear publicly initially as the company wants to ensure the system is working properly.
Notably, Meta aims to launch this approach to all users globally, however, it won’t do that immediately and until Community Notes are launched in other countries, the third party fact checking programme will remain in place for them.
